August 15th, 2007 · 9 Comments

Every Progressive should recognize and incorporate, deep in their soul, the plain fact:  Peak and Global Warming are the most serious threats to Progressive ideals, concepts, policies, and aspirations through the 21st century … AND today.

These are not just let’s wait until tomorrow issues, that should be put in the back of the line to deal with after other issues, we must address them with urgency today if we hope for a progressive world tomorrow. [Read more →]

August 14th, 2007 · 2 Comments

Energize America, the people-powered plan for a sustainable energy future, has evolved.  Evolved from unknown bloggers sharing concerns about mounting energy problems, to a blogger community developing a holistic approach, to the blogosphere working with Congress to develop specific legislative approaches to help deal with the nation’s challenges.

At  YearlyKos 2007, the EA2020 team reviewed the process, discussed achievements to date, and lay a path into the future.

This is the third portion of the presentation. Part 1, From Nowhere to Vegas, covered the beginning of the effort. Part 2, From Vegas to Chicago developments through March, and here is part 3:  Crashing the Hill and charting a way forward.

Lieberman-Warner …

August 14th, 2007 · Comments Off on Lieberman-Warner …

Okay, there’s a new bill out there Global Warming:  Lieberman-Warner. BiPartisan as it comes from the one-person strong Connecticut-For-Lieberman party and a Republican.   This bill is, well, politely a mediocrity, something impressive if James Inhofe (R-Exxon) were still chair of the committe, but with Barbara Boxer holding the gavel.

Sadly, too many people — environmentalists and political leaders — can’t figure out how to praise it too highly. [Read more →]

Eco wear … and some tech that goes into it

August 12th, 2007 · Comments Off on Eco wear … and some tech that goes into it

Generally, visitors here are into the technology, that high-end variation for creating a sustainable future and lessening humanity’s footprint on the earth.  Time to lighten up a little bit and realize that fashion is something to look to as well for that smaller footprint.

More durable products made from less damaging materials … Green clothing can make the designer real green. [Read more →]

Conservatives vs NASA on Global Warming

August 11th, 2007 · Comments Off on Conservatives vs NASA on Global Warming

Editor’s note: As times, when especially valuable and appropriate, EnergySmart will feature guest blog posts.  Considering the thunderstorm over data errors on temperature data, I planned to write something.  But, fellow Energize America team member Chapter 1 wrote a tremendous piece which merits reading. This is a slightly edited version of his significant contribution to the discussion.

“The only thing Antwan ever touched of mine was my hand, when he shook it at my wedding…  But when you little scamps get together, you’re worse than a sewing circle.” Mia Wallace in Pulp Fiction.

Spend some time with me as we follow a rumor’s spread through the conservative blogosphere.  It begins with a story about how a persistent conservative blogger found a minor (but genuine) error in a NASA dataset, and how that error was promptly acknowledged and corrected.  This story was told by the original blogger a few days ago, and then retold by other bloggers (with improvements) and again by other bloggers (with more improvements).

By yesterday, we could read on A-List conservative blogs that “global warming hype” is largely derived from a Y2K bug, that the the new information is being suppressed by the media, and that someone had possibly launched an attack on the original blogger’s web site to prevent the truth from getting out.

We’ll start at the beginning by looking at the underlying science; what the error was, and why it matters.  And we’ll see how that science got lost in successive retellings, even as blogger and poster after poster added sensational (but false) details to the story.

Let us go on a voyage to understand the path from fact to ‘tin-foil hat’ conspiracy … [Read more →]

Hansen: Declaration of Stewardship

August 10th, 2007 · Comments Off on Hansen: Declaration of Stewardship

Jim Hansen has clearly determined that the time to stay silent has long past. That urgency demands urgent voices. That he must — and other scientists — should speak out forcefully.

Hansen is not just speaking forcefully, he is also speaking eloquently.  This past week, at a Re-Energize America event, Hansen gave a speech that spoke to the risks of Global Warming and discussed his draft Declaration of Stewardship for the Earth and all Creation to be asked of every candidate (at all levels).
