Teed up by Chuck Todd’s abysmal climate change question (about flood insurance prices) in the Virginia gubernatorial debate, Glenn Youngkin lived up to what one would expect from the Virginian Republican (Grand Oil Party) nominee for Governor: predatory delay truthiness. In summary, Youngkin Avoided saying “climate change” and directly acknowledging basic reality which would risk […]

Climate change makes an appearance in Virginia gubernatorial debate (Or, how Chuck Todd exemplifies dismal media framing of climate crisis)
September 29th, 2021 · 1 Comment
The climate crisis made a brief appearance in last evening’s Virginia gubernatorial debate (see here for commentary on other portions of the debate) An oddball question from NBC’s Chuck Todd sparked strong comments from Democrat Terry McAuliffe and shallow predatory-delay, deceptive climate-truthiness from Trump-wannabe Glenn Youngkin. In a southern state that, under Democratic Party leadership, […]

The Keystone XL Treatment: Death notice for new fossil foolish infrastructure?
February 2nd, 2021 · 1 Comment
President Biden’s first two weeks have been busy, productive, and exciting. Mehdi Hasan is not alone in concluding that “Biden’s first days in office were way better than I expected.” So many impressive (capable, ethical, experienced, passionate) appointees. Fair, but firm, engagement as to calls for “bipartisan” to undermine progress (as opposed to unity for […]

After six years of battling, Virginians concerned about climate change, environmental injustice, and a prosperous energy future had reason for Sunday afternoon celebration with Dominion Energy’s and Duke Energy’s announcement of cancellation of the fossil-foolish Atlantic Coast Pipeline (ACP).

June 29th, 2020 · Comments Off on Clean Energy Milestone: First Offshore Wind Installed in U.S. Federal Waters
A bit earlier this morning, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam signed legislation on offshore wind and then headed out to see the first two offshore wind turbines installed in Federal waters. I’m in Virginia Beach this morning to sign important legislation that will help make our Commonwealth a national leader in offshore wind. Tune in: https://t.co/ejZhYmTQnm […]

CoronaVirus Crisis-Opportunity: Virginia Clean Economy Edition
March 9th, 2020 · Comments Off on CoronaVirus Crisis-Opportunity: Virginia Clean Economy Edition
A well-used but (all too) often adage Never let a good crisis go to waste. While not wanting to suggest that a global pandemic is a ‘good’, this crisis does create opportunity for action (and not just for unethical Amazon vendor price gouging). Clean energy investing, across all economy, is a prime example of this. […]
Restraints on School Buses: Don’t mandate without public policy/cost-benefit analysis (Virginia ESB edition)
March 6th, 2020 · Comments Off on Restraints on School Buses: Don’t mandate without public policy/cost-benefit analysis (Virginia ESB edition)
The U.S. Department of Transportation and the Virginia state government agencies do not mandate seat belts on school buses. School bus design, over the years, has focused on providing a safe space without seat belts. School buses are already the safest form of road transportation in the United States and it is quite unclear, when one […]

Progress, Not Perfection: Virginia’s Democratic Legislature Is Getting the People’s Business Done
February 22nd, 2020 · Comments Off on Progress, Not Perfection: Virginia’s Democratic Legislature Is Getting the People’s Business Done
Human beings sometimes have a hard time celebrating progress. Somewhat as an analogy to loss aversion, what didn’t occur that we wanted or expected can have far greater prominence to us than the partial desires which were met. And, we (often unconsciously) can move the goal posts such that progress have led popping champagne bottles just […]

Virginia’s “Clean Economy” Future: Time to Hold Our Noses
February 12th, 2020 · Comments Off on Virginia’s “Clean Economy” Future: Time to Hold Our Noses
I appreciate, seriously, the efforts to develop, draw attention to, pass the sort of legislation that required in our times. Within my space, two bills have represented two overlapping visions and paths for moving Virginia toward a cleaner, climate-sensible future: the Virginia Green New Deal (GND-VA) and the Virginia Clean Economy Act (VCEA).
