On the prowl for reasons for optimism re clean energy? Here are 10 …

A simple truth — only dupes and villains can deny that we face very serious risks and consequences from climate change. The key hope, however, is that we (writ large) still have some potential to control how bad the situation will become and opportunities to seize value streams along the path toward climate change mitigation […]

With today’s roll-out of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidance for reducing coal-fired electricity plants carbon emissions, industry interests have been pressuring hard with efforts to undermine public support for EPA action. Before heading further and in line with the Debunking Handbook, let us start with some basic truths about investing in climate mitigation. Climate mitigation investments […]

Buried in @WhiteHouse staff report: Energy Information Administration planning for a 6C future
June 1st, 2014 · 4 Comments
The White House release a report yesterday heralding the All of the Above energy policy. Entitled “The All-Of-The-Above Energy Strategy as a Path to Sustainable Economic Growth,” the document seeks to bask in expanded US oil and natural gas production while asserting that policies for energy efficiency and renewable energy are setting the stage for […]

.@WhiteHouse makes clear that @EIAgov does lousy fossil fuel forecasting, ignores that its #Solar and #Wind forecasting even worse
May 30th, 2014 · 5 Comments
Weirdly, while spending many pages detailing how the Energy Information Agency (EIA) failed to predict accurately fossil fuel trends, the report’s authors failed to highlight that the real-world performance of renewable energy (notably wind and solar) has greatly outperformed baseline forecasts. With the President’s call for more solar energy, highlighting that renewables have been doing so well (in price reductions and speed of market penetration) would seem something strongly support of Administration objectives rather than for something to be ignored in a 42-page White House report.

“best is a future free of fossil fuels”: @DevalPatrick inspires @UMass … and me

Each spring, millions of Americans at 1,000s of High Schools and Universities sit through commencement speeches. While many are filled with overused cliches and serve only as a speed bump en route post graduation parties, others represent mind-changing moments that “are truly worth remembering, or so well-said that they stick in the memory longer than […]

Unpublished Letters: Solution to Ukraine isn’t “Drill, Baby, Drill” to “Pollute, Baby, Pollute”
March 23rd, 2014 · 5 Comments
WarrenS has taken on an admirable resolution: to send a letter to the editor (LTE) (or, well, a major politician) every single day, on the critical issues of climate change and energy. This discusses his approach and here is an amusing ‘template’ to for rapid letter writing. Now, I have always written letters and even had many […]

The answer is clear: #KeystoneXL is NOT in U.S. National Interest
March 5th, 2014 · 1 Comment
Despite $100s of millions spent to obfuscate the issue, the reality of the Keystone XL pipeline is that it is NOT in the U.S. national interest. Keystone XL will: Increase climate risks Worsen environmental damage in Alberta, CA, due to increased tar sands exploitation Increase gasoline and diesel prices for most Americans Hurt American economic […]

Amid DC #WeatherWhiplash, 400 arrested @Whitehouse protesting #KeystoneXL
March 2nd, 2014 · Comments Off on Amid DC #WeatherWhiplash, 400 arrested @Whitehouse protesting #KeystoneXL
Today, some 400 university students were arrested at the White House. These students are a leading wave of what could be the largest civil disobedience movement in the United States in decades. Echoing the over 1200 arrested two summers ago, also at the White House fence, these 400 — and the thousands who marched from […]

Portfolio Theory vs the Myth of Intermittent Wind Power
February 24th, 2014 · Comments Off on Portfolio Theory vs the Myth of Intermittent Wind Power
Another guest post from the very thoughtful BruceMcF. Several points: Key: If viewed as “portfolio” (and combined with advancing smart grid and storage options as penetration increases), clean energy can phase into replace 100% of the fossil-foolish electricity grid. Second, BruceMcF violates the cardinal law of debunking myths (here): Don’t lead with the myth because, […]
