Consider the nightmarish conditions of much of Australia in February 2009, this item from Barry Brook at BraveNewClimate.COM is worth pondering

It is clear to me that climate change is now becoming such a strong contributor to these hitherto unimaginable events that the language starts to change from one of “climate change increased the chances of an event” to “without climate change this event could not have occured”.

    Yes exactly. I think counting the number of “sigmas” an event deviates from the old average would be one reasonable measure of how unlikely it was, without climate change – I suggested something like that here
