Every day is a learning experience … so what did we learn today? That NPR is not just radio … is not just a web site … but also does some funny cartooning. As part of their Climate Connections series, NPR has a myriad of reports, links, videos, and, well, cartoons. The May Day cartoon, It’s All About Carbon
What we have done here is a chemistry lesson, one that begins with the elemental cause of global warming: the behavior of the carbon atom.
This is pretty basic stuff … an entertaining way to provide perhaps junior high school (maybe) level science explanations. Such as the reminder that, remove the water from a human, and about 2/3rds of the remaining body weight is carbon.
So, take a moment, watch the video, and add your voice to feedback to NPR about how best to educate the American public about basic science issues. Are you enthused that they’re taking this tact? Or, outraged about what it says about Americans scientific illiteracy?

Tuesday I was driving to a meeting and I heard this carbon story on NPR. I was absolutely enthralled by it. It may be basic chemistry, but I certainly needed a refresher course. I urge everyone to listen to it, but more importantly, encourage kids to listen as well. Talk about making learning fun! Bravo NPR. I was subsequently late to my meeting as I had to hear the end!
