The dangers of listening to Bobby Jindal

May 3rd, 2010 · 1 Comment

Louisiana’s governor Bobby Jindal (R) seems to be a dangerous man to listen to …

When given the opportunity to give a response to President Obama’s February 2009 speech to Congress, Bobby Jindal chose to attack, as wasteful, Federal research on volcanos.

“Instead of monitoring volcanoes, what Congress should be monitoring is the eruption of spending in Washington, D.C.”

Putting aside minor little U.S. events over the years like Mount St Helens, the significant economic disruption from air travel restrictions amid Iceland’s recent (minor) volcanic blast would suggest that research on and monitoring of volcanic activity is a wise expenditure of the taxpayers’ money.

Along with too many others, Bobby Jindal was a strong supporter of expanded offshore drilling including being one of the “main supporters” of legislation to end the moratorium on offshore drilling when he was a member of Congress.

Jindal now is highly critical that BP and the Federal Government aren’t acting fast enough or aggressively enough on oil clean-up conveniently forgetting that he was one of the “main supporters” of ever-more aggressive efforts to exploit oil on the outer continental shelf. And, when reporting that, for some reason, journalists aren’t contrasting Jindal’s complaints today with his past strong support for offshore drilling.

In any event, if I hear Bobby Jindal say that clean energy legislation is not great for the economy, I think that I’ll be remembering volcanos and oil spills as I dismiss his comments as dangerous to listen to.
